Amroth Beach

Amroth Beach is a great sandy beach, backed by a charming coastal village where time seems to have stood still. The local area was once important for anthracite mining until the end of the 19^th Century and some slight remains of mines and tramways are still visible.

This south Pembrokeshire spot at Amroth makes a top choice for families looking to explore the surrounding areas with the ever-popular seaside destinations of Tenby and Saundersfoot nearby. Stay in the village overlooking the beach and you'll need never leave during your stay as facilities are on-hand, or let your explorations take you further afield along the coastline. Either way, you're sure to want to return to this Pembrokeshire beach time and time again. 

Activities

This beach is particularly popular with canoeists and kayakers as it is easy to carry your canoe down the slipway, onto the beach and into the water. Canoe along the coast to the neighbouring villages of Wisemans Bridge and Saundersfoot stopping off at the likes of Coppet Hall Beach along your way for a picnic, or take advantage of the many coastal pubs in these seaside villages. Take along your fishing rod for a spot of sea fishing from your boat or head back to the beach which you will find is frequented with sea anglers throughout the year as it's an ideal spot for keen anglers to get their catch of the day.

At low tide, a wide expanse of sand is exposed creating a spacious shoreline perfect for beach games such as football and rounders, with plenty of space to mark out your sandy pitches. This long bay is peppered by a series of groynes which help protect the village from winter storms and in summer months, provide the perfect shelter for families to lay out their picnic blankets and towels, and settle in for a day on the beach. Children will enjoy a spot of sandcastle building or competitions as to who can dig the deepest hole, whilst adults may prefer a soothing afternoon sunbathing with a book.

At high tide, the sea comes up to the large pebble bank which then becomes a great place to sit and listen to the sea rolling over the pebbles drawing them back and forth. Stacking the pebbles making artistic towers is a fun pastime as is skimming stones here. This is also a great place to try out some pebble art with an abundance of pebbles of all sizes, all you need is a sharpie and some creative inspiration.

The western side of the beach marks the beginning of the spectacular Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which winds its way for 186 miles past each of the splendid coves, beaches and cliffs of the Pembrokeshire National Park. The first section will take you along the cliffs to the neighbouring village of Wisemans Bridge and then follows along to Saundersfoot and Tenby beyond. The Wisemans Bridge Inn is a perfect place to stop for a drink or meal before returning to Amroth or journeying on to Saundersfoot.

Close to Amroth, you will find the wonderful Colby Woodland Gardens which are part of the National Trust. The gardens provide a beautiful peaceful setting for woodland walks and strolls around the walled gardens which are awash with flowers in the late spring and summer months. The gardens are also home to a  host of wildlife including bats, dippers, otters and butterflies. The lawned areas are ideal for a family picnic and dogs are allowed on leads.

Events

In the autumn, Amroth Beach hosts the Osprey Sea Fishing Competition so it's no wonder that local anglers flock here throughout the year. 

Facilities

Parking and facilities here are good, with some spaces along the sea wall including some disabled spaces near to the toilet and baby changing facilities at the west end of the beach. The main car park, free at present, is located just behind the shops at the junction with the pub.

There is a range of gift shops, cafes and restaurants behind the beach, handy for when you want to pick up refreshments like cold drinks, snacks and ice creams. For locally produced ice-creams, call into The Pirate Café. The seafront is home to a small convenience shop where you can pick up basic everyday needs and all your beach necessities such as buckets and spades, fishing nets, frisbees, footballs and inflatables. In addition, you can browse a range of giftware perfect to take home as mementos.

The cafes and restaurants in the village serve a range of food from sandwiches to fish and chips. Expect varied menus of delicious dishes, many using fresh local produce. There is a pub in the centre of the village called The Amroth Arms and at the eastern end of the village, there is The New Inn set back off the road with a large beer garden ideal for alfresco dining on a warm summers day.

There is a lifeguard at the beach from the beginning of July to the end of September.

Access

There is a walkway along the whole length of the beach, making it ideal for a steady stroll along the edge of this beautiful beach with spectacular sea views. This is accessible for prams and wheelchairs but be aware, there is a small hill near to the village itself.

The village is backed by houses dotted along the beachfront and up the surrounding hillside, some of which are holiday cottages in the perfect place for a beachside holiday. Holiday cottages in Amroth are ideal for families looking for a beach location, with plenty of places to eat and drink and where you can relax and enjoy your days without having to use the car.

Is Amroth Beach dog friendly?

Amroth Beach imposes dog restrictions to the central and western areas of the beach during the summer months between 1st May to 30th of September, however, the eastern end remains dog friendly all year round. Even when the restrictions are in place, you can still walk along the roadside and along the coastal path here.
